John Middleton

John Andrew Middleton's civil war unit was Company G, 108th Regiment of the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. He enlisted in this unit at Johnstown, PA, on 4 September 1861, in response to Lincoln's call to the individual states for additional troops in the wake of the Union debacle at First Bull Run (Manassas) in July. He was, at that time, employed as a puddler in a Pennsylvania steelmill, married to Mary (Hammer) and had two kids, Lorenzo John, and John Sylvester. He and Mary, by this time, had had two other children, Franklin and Anarsa (spelling unclear in bible), who died in childhood. My Middleton line The Middletons trace their earliest roots back to Virginia, probably in the Shenandoah Valley where John Middleton was born and PA census records indicate both his parents were born in Virginia.
