Biography of Jacob Stevens Jacob Stevens was a widower at the time of the Civil War. He walked from Bedford County to adjacent Somerset County with his three children and left them with family friends. Then he enlisted at Huntingdon, PA (age 39) on the day before Christmas, 1864. He never came back from the war. His son, my great grandfather, had a small farm (< 10 acres) in Somerset County when he become an adult. My grandfather, also a Jacob, was the youngest son of around 10 children and he inherited that farm. He was a WWI veteran and served in France.
