July, Aug 1862 - on detached service as Scout.
Mentioned in dispatches as being first to reach a Confederate cannon during action in Southside, Virginia.
Discharged at Bermuda Hundred, 21 Sept 1864, "by reason of expiration of term of service".

Married Mary A. Townsend 14 Sept 1861 at Border Plains, Webster Cty, IA. (Short honeymoon).
Became a farmer at Pocahontas County, IA, and fathered seven children. The first, Ora P. Malcolm, was
born 21 Nov 1865. The last, Frank S. Malcolm, 31 Jan 1879.

Was clerk of Pocahontas County Court for some years, both before and after military service.
Received a modest pension for disability associated with military service. Complaint was "rheumatism, kidney disease
and neuralgia" brought on by exposure. His medical record (about 1900) showed height of 5'6", weight 130.
